Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Institutional Communications (with a dotted line to the Chief of Staff to the Principal, and the Senior Director, Office of the Provost and Vice-Principal Academic), this role provides strategic and tactical support for all aspects of the Principal and Vice-Chancellor’s internal and external communications, and for matters of particular complexity and strategic importance within the Provost and Vice-Principal of Academic’s office. The incumbent will proactively position the Principal and Provost as inspiring thought leaders on the local, national and international scenes, advancing topics and goals of keen interest to McGill, its community, and society in general. Working closely with senior leadership, Faculties and Units, the incumbent will develop and implement a strategic communications plan, draft extensive messaging and communications materials, maximize the Principal’s and the Provost’s visibility and impact, and further their priorities and McGill’s key objectives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Drafts extensive, top-quality, executive-level communications including speeches, presentations, op-eds, key messages, talking points, statements, briefing notes, correspondence, website text and more.
  • Builds, evaluates, implements and/or oversees the deployment of communications strategies for major initiatives of the Principal’s Office, and for matters of strategic importance in the Provost’s office, in particular initiatives tied to equity.
  • Ensures the relevance, quality, accuracy, consistency, timeliness and alignment of all communications prepared for the Principal and Provost.
  • Proactively identifies topics and events of high interest to the Principal and Provost.
  • Working closely with McGill’s central and Faculty/Unit communications teams, ensures that events in which the Principal and Provost participate are professionally prepared and in conformity with protocol.
  • Organizes speaking engagements and selects strategic venues.
  • Researches topics of interest to the Principal and Provost and prepares briefings for events and meetings.
  • Liaises with other University offices on communications initiatives undertaken on the Principal’s and Provost’s behalf.
  • Collaborates with partner organizations on strategic communications for projects involving the Principal and Provost.
  • Makes recommendations for the revision and maintenance of the Principal’s and Provost’s websites, and ensures their timely and thorough implementation.

Qualifications

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Preferred eight (8) years spent developing and implementing communications plans (internal and external) and writing extensive, top-quality, executive-level communications materials for a large organization with activity at the national or international level.
  • Demonstrated strategic vision and thinking in communications (internal and external).
  • Capacity to work well under pressure and to undertake multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Sound judgement, rigour and political acumen.
  • Superior writing skills in both English and French, including strong demonstrated expertise in speechwriting; excellent spoken English and French.
  • In-depth knowledge of contemporary issues and topics within higher education
  • In-depth knowledge of university contexts and stakeholder interests.
  • B.A. in Communications, Public Relations or related field; M.A., an asset.
  • Knowledge of McGill University and/or the Quebec/Canadian higher education sector, an asset.

Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree, 5 Years Related Experience

Annual Salary: $70,710.00 - $106,070.00

Hours per Week: 33.75 (Full time)
