POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Manager of Economic Development & Communications, the Communications Coordinator develops, promotes, and implements communications materials for departmental or organizational initiatives, ensuring that communications activities reflect the priorities and goals as set out in the WFN Government Strategic Plan. The Communications Coordinator works to enhance community awareness and engagement in WFN government programs, services and initiatives, and enhance communication and relationships with residents, businesses, and stakeholders.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works collaboratively with staff to develop and implement communications activities that increase membership and public engagement and understanding of government programs and initiatives
  • Works with departments to determine communications requirements for activities or events
  • Monitors communication efforts, tracks participation and engagement, and reports on metrics
  • Identifies opportunities to improve and enhance the wfn.ca website and strategic use of digital media
  • Researches, writes, and edits a variety of information materials, including social media posts, web articles, brochures, backgrounders and advertisements
  • Promotes and occasionally organizes WFN events, conferences, workshops, programs and services
  • Publishes information on WFN’s digital media platforms including website, social media and reader board
  • Develops and implements strategic social media campaigns that meet the objectives and goals of WFN
  • Proactively identifies potential conflicts or concerns arising online and brings to the attention of the Manager of Economic Development & Communications
  • Understands and adapts to the evolving nature of online engagement
  • Ensures relevant and consistent messaging is delivered in a timely manner
  • Ensures WFN’s identity and brand standards are maintained including consistency and professionalism in messaging
  • Maintains and complies with program policies, procedures and reporting as required
  • Maintains a high degree of confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of Westbank First Nation
  • Performs other related duties as required by the Manager of Economic Development & Communications
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards and procedures

Qualifications

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND CERTIFICATION
  • Diploma or Degree in Communications, English, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, political science or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution required
EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum two (2) years related full-time experience in communications, public relations, marketing, political science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Experience working in a Local Government or First Nation organization is preferred
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Hootsuite, and content management systems
  • Experience in issues management, media relations, and social media engagement
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
  • Proficiency with web content management systems and social media platforms
  • Understanding of the techniques of civic engagement and communications
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships, work in complex and sensitive situations, work independently and within a team environment, and manage competing priorities
  • Knowledge of WFN programs, services, and culture
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Proficiency with desktop publishing software (Adobe Creative Suite), graphic design, photography, web design, and publication production/printing is considered an asset
