Director, Public Relations & Engagement

Job Description

Interior Health is looking to fill a key role on the Communications Leadership Team. The Director, Public Relations and Engagement reports directly to the Vice President, Communications & Public Engagement and has joint accountability for the development and implementation of proactive and responsive public relations and engagement strategies for Interior Health. 

The Director is accountable for developing and leading a team of communications professionals, and drives a proactive engagement framework for media management, government relations, and the IH corporate digital/online communications strategy. Through coaching, guiding, and modeling key behaviours and strategies, this position encourages dialogue, and provides guidance and advice to facilitate resolutions to work issues and to define the teams shared and individual goals, and ensure alignment of team goals with clients.

Working within a large and complex multi-site organization the Director requires an understanding of the many diverse internal and external audiences across IH, along with the unique challenges faced by Interior Health to communicate across diverse communities and audiences.

The Director oversees development, coordination, and ongoing management of daily and proactive engagement frameworks and messaging related to media and government at the local, regional, and provincial levels, as well as crisis communication management.

This position possesses an awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by distinct, vulnerable and/or minority populations, and has experience delivering inclusive and robust communications and engagement on behalf of a large organization.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree specializing in Communications, Public Relations, journalism or a related field. Experience and demonstrated success in a large complex multi-union and/or public sector environment including 8 to 10 years of leadership experience and experience in media management and government relations is required. Healthcare experience in or a strong understanding of the complexities of a large healthcare provider is a strong asset.
