Senior Communications Officer, Media & Issues

Job Description
The Senior Communications Officer supports building public and media understanding of BCLC by providing strategic advice and support in the areas of media relations, issues management and proactive communications.
 
The Senior Communications Officer serves as one of the corporation’s media spokespeople and is responsible for the development and implementation of strategic communication plans.  This role deals directly with key internal and external stakeholders, including BCLC executive, media and government. The role requires the capacity for sound judgment to navigate challenging situations, while maintaining consistent messaging through all channels.
 

Accountabilities:

- Proactively develops and delivers external communications, marketing communications, issues management or media relations strategies and recommends appropriate communications solutions.

- Coordinates and implements responses to media requests, briefing materials and strategic communications plans.

- Provides issues management support to the business by collaborating with internal stakeholders to analyze the issue and develop a communications strategy to manage a positive outcome for BCLC.

- Serves as one of the corporation’s media spokespeople and assists in training other spokespeople.

- Provides strategic communication support associated to government relations initiatives.

- Effectively utilizes all existing communication tools and tactics and provides innovative approaches to ensure that messages are communicated effectively to external audiences.

- Proactively builds, develops and maintains relationships with key internal stakeholders from across the organization and with external stakeholders such as government contacts and media.

- Responds to media enquiries after hours as required (carries the media phone, on a rotational basis). 

Qualifications

- Degree or diploma in communications, journalism and or public relations;

- 4 to 6 years current, related experience in a strategic communications position;

- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered;

- Demonstrated experience in the strategic development and implementation of strategic and proactive communications initiatives;

- Ability to develop messages that effectively tell the organization’s story to a variety of audiences;

- Demonstrated understanding of media relations and issues management, including experience as a spokesperson on behalf of an organization;

- Proven ability to provide direction based upon comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of strategic communications, marketing communications and issues management;

- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and negotiate with people at all levels;

- Exceptional written communication skills, editing skills and capacity to tailor information for various audiences;

- Outstanding critical-thinking skills and demonstrated problem solving capabilities;

- Adaptability and flexibility, including ability to manage competing deadline pressures, ambiguity and change;

- Strong computer skills - MS Office suite;

- Understanding of government relations and stakeholder relations as it pertains to the B.C. gaming industry an asset.
