POSITION: Manager, Communications

REPORTS TO: Director, Communications
STATUS: Permanent, Full Time


Reporting to the Director, Communications, and part of the Marketing & Communications department at Hockey Canada, the Manager, Communications works with their direct reports and colleagues in the Communications department on the day-to-day communications and media relations activities for Hockey Canada – from corporate communications and events to grassroots and our men’s and women’s national teams. The Manager, Communications, will play a strong role in the development and execution of strategies and plans that support Hockey Canada’s messaging platform and help grow the game from coast to coast to coast, through earned media, social media and in coordination with Hockey Canada’s broadcast partners.


·        Assist with the development of overall communications planning based on organization’s priorities (strategy and execution)

§  Oversee and lead day-to-day communications support for Hockey Canada, including providing media/communications support for various national and international events, and national teams as assigned:

o   Planning and execution of news conferences

o   Drafting/editing of media materials, including but not limited to news releases, media advisories, game re-caps, messaging briefs, etc.

o   Coordinate interview requests and work with spokespersons on messaging

o   Monitor media coverage for story trends and reputational impacts, both positive and negative

o   Assist with media training of staff and players

§  Work with volunteers and committees at domestic and international events – assigning and coordinating media/PR duties

§  Assist with the production and distribution of communication materials to media, Hockey Canada Members and staff

§  Undergraduate degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related experience

§  At least five (5) years’ experience in all aspects of communications

§  Assertive, self-starter with good time-management skills

§  Motivated, self-disciplined, personable and enthusiastic

§  Previous managerial experience

§  Excellent written and verbal skills

§  Strong social media awareness

§  Media-training and crisis communication experience an asset

§  High level of integrity in dealing with all stakeholders

§  Have fun and make a difference!

§  Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment requiring effective time-management and can prioritize many tasks with ease

§  Strong leadership skills as well as the ability to work as a team player

§  Excellent interpersonal skills; promotes cooperation and commitment within a team to achieve goals and objectives

§  Demonstrated communication skills; ability to use a broad range of communication techniques to effectively communicate to varying audiences in a variety of situations

§  Exceptional organizational and time-management skills; ability to balance conflicting priorities in order to manage workflow, ensure the completion of essential projects and meet deadlines

§  High level of integrity; earns others’ trust and respect through consistent honesty and professionalism in all interactions

§  Demonstrated high level of proficiency in Microsoft Programs, Outlook and ability to quickly adapt to new technology and easily acquire new technical skills

§  Bilingualism (English/French) is a requirement

§  Ability to travel nationally and internationally
