The Opportunity:

As a member of the Marketing and Communications team, you will develop and proactively engage with various media and influencers on behalf of the faculty to build ongoing relationships. The Media Relations Specialist leverages relationships to favorably position the faculty and its reputation within the industry as well as researches and produces media content. The Media Relations Specialist liaises with internal stakeholders and provides technical expertise for effective management of high visibility matters on behalf of the faculty.


  • Researches and writes key messages around critical or high visibility issues for use internally and externally
  • Researches and develops story angles such as research impact, faculty achievements or student successes that will help lead to financial and other support from prospects, industry partners and target community
  • Engages with and develops contacts and cordial relationships with media and influencers, including local, regional, national and international media including technology, engineering, science, educational, business, political affairs writers, columnists and editors
  • Leverages relationships to position the faculty, its image and reputation favourably on matters relevant to the targeted audience
  • Advises the faculty leadership and other internal stakeholders (staff, faculty and departmental heads) about media and community relations and develops media training and interview techniques sessions for internal leaders.
  • Advises faculty and staff early on to frame stories that would be of interest to the media from conception to execution.
  • Supports the Manager with various marketing and communication projects
  • Completion of a post-secondary degree program in Journalism, Communications or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience:
    • within an agency in a dedicated marketing/branded communications environment
    • liaising with media from international, national, regional and local outlets, as well as specialized media such as trade, ethnic and other media.
  • Experience liaising with media from international, national, regional and local news outlets, as well as specialized media including trade, ethnic and other media
  • Demonstrated success in media relations and effective pitching with a proven understanding of the changing media landscape
  • Strong relationships with media across Canada and U.S.
  • Experience at handling critical communication issues under extreme pressure including representing the faculty to the media
  • Comprehensive knowledge of various issues relating STEM and academics
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a story line that showcases faculty in a positive and media-friendly manner
  • Ability to work proactively and manage shifting priorities and projects
  • Providing communications or writing for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, planning, problem solving, strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proficient knowledge of CP Style.
  • Good client service focus.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
