Communications Officer

One-year, part-time (21-28 hours/week) term position

The British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) is a not for profit organization dedicated to building and sustaining active healthy lifestyles and communities in BC.  Established in 1958, the Association is a central resource agency for members and stakeholders of the parks, recreation, physical activity and culture industry, providing leadership, training and support to help meet national, provincial and local priorities.  Through a diverse network of partners and extensive programs and services, the BCRPA actively advocates accessibility and inclusiveness to recreation and physical activity.

We are currently seeking a part-time Communications Officer who will be responsible for promoting the BCRPA, its programs and services to members, partners and stakeholders.

Reporting to, and assisting the Communications and Member Relations Manager, the Communications Officer’s duties and responsibilities include:

  •  Develop and implement dynamic event communication and promotions plans, and represent the BCRPA at events as required
  • Create and produce compelling strategic stories
  • Write, edit, and produce a variety of marketing and communication materials, electronic communiques and e-bulletins, newsletter submissions, reports, grant proposals, news releases, annual report, speeches, letters to the editor, opinion pieces, advocacy papers, membership drive letters, social media posts, etc.
  • Stewardship of the BCRPA brand, ensuring protocol is adhered to and brand is promoted and represented appropriately
  • Manage and monitor website content
  • Write and coordinate dissemination of news releases and track media coverage
  • Create presentations as needed (e.g. multi-media)
  • Manage external graphic designers and/or other contractors as necessary
  • Other related duties as required

Terms of Employment:

  1. Employment to begin on or around April 9 with a three-month probationary period for a one-year term. Satisfactory completion of the probationary period will be determined through a performance review.
  2. Work is 21 – 28 hours/week.   Rate of pay: $25 – $33/hr based on skills and experience. 
  3. Three week vacation leave to be provided.
  4. There is no benefits package associated with this contract.

 Required skills and knowledge:

  • Demonstrated skill in developing and implementing all facets of a strategic communications plan (short-listed candidates will be asked to provide samples).
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate communications needs, and identify and develop the best tools and best timing for providing effective information to various audiences
  • Proven writing and editing skills (short-listed candidates will be asked to provide writing samples).
  • Proficiency in social and digital media, including content posting and distribution.
  • Experience with posting and maintaining web content.
  • Exemplary attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines and to juggle numerous tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, strong team player with a positive attitude.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, databases etc.).

Desired training and experience:

  • Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or a related discipline, and at least five years of experience in a communications and/or community relations position, or an equivalent combination of training, education and experience.
  • Experience identifying and executing story opportunities.
