Nova Scotia Health Authority provides health services to Nova Scotians and some specialized services to Maritimers and Atlantic Canadians. We operate hospitals, health centres and community-based programs across the province. Our team of health professionals includes employees, doctors, researchers, learners and volunteers that provide the health care or services you may need. This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Nova Scotia Health Authority is a provincial health, research and academic organization that delivers health services to Nova Scotians, as well as offers certain specialized services to the Maritimes and Atlantic Canada. Working closely with the IWK Health Centre, NSHA is evolving and stewarding the health agenda for individuals, families and communities and has charted an ambitious course for improved health outcomes.  NSHA is supported by a team of more than 30,000 employees, physicians, learners and volunteers.
To support us in our journey of ensuring healthy people, healthy communities for generations, we are currently looking for a Chief of Public Engagement and Communications to provide strategic public engagement and communications leadership for the organization. The Public Engagement and Communications portfolio provides credible, relevant and timely information to individuals, families and communities. This includes oversight of all aspects of the corporate and executive communications as well as public engagement strategies and plans to ensure that we are listening to individuals, families and communities and responsive to their needs and concerns, and we are engaging them in improving health outcomes for our province.
Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, this position will provide strategic leadership to advance the health authority’s mission, vision, values and priorities, and to guide the organization through system transformation to position it for long-term and successful attainment of its goals. It will be responsible for executive oversight for developing, planning and executing comprehensive internal and public engagement and communications plans that reflect best practice in the sector, and build trust, credibility and understanding both within and outside of the organization.
This position will serve as a key strategist, working closely with the President/CEO, the executive team, senior leadership teams and key stakeholders to proactively identify opportunities and risks, and to provide strategic direction on all matters that impact corporate reputation and position within the health sector and in the public sphere. This includes: internal organizational communications; strategic stakeholder relations; crisis and issues management; media relations; reputation management, branding and marketing; digital communications (social, web and media engagement); executive communications and visibility; and public engagement.  The position also coordinates our strategic engagement with Community Health Boards to promote health and wellness, and supports effective government relations as it relates to the communications portfolio in collaboration with other members of the Executive Team.

Salary Information

$135,890.62 - $169,863.13 annual

*Effective April 1, 2018, there will be a 1.5 % approved economic adjustment.

-          The ideal candidate will be strategic executive leader possessing a Master’s level preparation with undergraduate degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a related program.

The Chief will have built a career of demonstrated outcomes with at least ten (10) years of progressive senior leadership experience in planning, delivering and evaluating public engagement and corporate communications within a large, complex organization across several locations, with multiple partners and stakeholders.

Exceptional communications and interpersonal abilities are required, as well as the ability to effectively work across all levels of the organization, and alongside key partners.

The Chief will have excellent leadership skills with the ability to present views in a clear and compelling manner, and develop trust and influence as a thought leader with a broad relationship base.

A designation from an internationally recognized Public Relations professional organization (IABC/CPRS) or a national and international recognition, certification in IAP2 public engagement.

Competency in other languages, (French is preferred) would be considered an asset.
