Reporting to the Director, Communications and Marketing, the Communications Associate proactively searches for opportunities to increase awareness and build the reputation of the Faculty of Engineering. The successful candidate will help develop and implement strategic communications plans supporting Faculty of Engineering goals; this involves communications planning, media relations, writing, design, content creation, and maintenance of websites, digital media production (photography, video and audio), and project co-ordination.


  • Plays a key role in the development and implementation of communications and marketing plans and activities, including positioning, market and competitive analysis, audience identification and penetration messaging, and related communications, for Faculty of Engineering programs departments, units, and initiatives
  • Designs, builds, and creates content for and maintains websites for key faculty units
  • Researches and writes content for various print and digital communication products
  • Uses photography and videography skills to enhance stories, media pitches and the faculty's website
  • With an understanding of communications and public relations best practices, collaborates with and provides communications support to all Engineering departments and units; shares knowledge by providing professional development to colleagues in the Faculty of Engineering
  • Coordinates and manages social media accounts for Faculty of Engineering and its units and departments
  • Develops communications and advertising plans for events related to student projects and services, alumni relations, special announcements and recruitment, in collaboration with partners across campus, government, and with alumni and industry partners and funding agencies; assists in crisis communications as required
  • Researches and identifies opportunities for program promotion and student recruitment, new programming, events, and courses
  • Organizes focus groups, surveys and other measurement tools

  • Minimum University degree in a related program, supplemented with training in  journalism, communications, professional writing, advertising and public relations; marketing training preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively successful, results-driven marketing and communications experience 
  • High level of integrity and trust, and a passion for working collaboratively and cooperatively with a wide range of people and cultures
  • Knowledge of the history, culture, strengths, and needs of the University of Alberta and the Faculty of Engineering and the engineering profession is an asset
  • Ability to lead and manage print, visual, electronic and digital communications processes
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific research to a lay audience
  • Exceptional creative, organizational, project management, problem solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; commitment to a culture of service, professionalism and confidentiality
