Senior Communications Advisor Issues and Media Term

Job Description

The Communications & Marketing (C&M) team is a high-performing team responsible for stewarding and enhancing the reputation and awareness of Dalhousie University through brand leadership and stewardship, communications (including digital and social media), public relations, media relations, issues management, crisis communications and community engagement. Reporting to the Director of Communications and Public Relations, the Senior Communications Advisor is responsible for anticipating, monitoring and analyzing issues, and developing proactive and responsive strategies to manage emerging issues. The position plays a pivotal role in reputation management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • In close connection with the Director, lead the development, facilitation and implementation of external and internal issues management strategies and tactics for emerging issues, which may involve highly sensitive content.
  • Participate in crisis communications planning and issues-related meetings and committees.
  • Build respectful, collaborative relationships with media and with key internal colleagues in senior administration, academic and research departments, and other groups on campus.
  • As an integral member of the C&M team, participate fully in developing unit plans and achieving the university’s strategic public relations and marketing goals.
  • Serve as media spokesperson as required.

Note: This position requires flexible working hours, some of which may be outside normal business hours.

Salary Range: $65,463 – $88,567 per annum (ADM-07). This is an three-year Term position. This is a provisional classification. Formal classification procedures will be initiated by the Compensation & Job Evaluation Unit in approximately six months.

This position is part of the Dalhousie Professional & Managerial Group (DPMG).

Qualifications

University degree, preferably in public relations, journalism or communications, plus a minimum of five years related experience in area of issues and reputation management (or equivalent combination of training and experience). Experience in managing issues in a high stress, crisis or critical situation is essential, along with a strong track record of successfully developing and executing strategic communications plans. Must have ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with national, regional and local media. Familiarity with social media is an asset.
