Director of Communications and Engagement

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Communications & Engagement provides vision and strategic leadership, direction and oversight for the implementation and evaluation of communications strategies and plans, community and stakeholder engagement strategies, and communications services and products.

More specifically, in this role you will:

·        Responsible for leading the implementation of a Communications & Engagement strategy that is aligned with the organizations strategic priorities, including public relations, stakeholder engagement, marketing, brand management, social media and issues management.

·        Develops a targeted and outcome-based community engagement strategy that elicits community engagement through participation and input from diverse stakeholders and the public through various mechanisms such as town hall meetings, focus groups, social media, correspondence, phone calls and website. Analyses and interprets information gathered through community engagement and identifies key priorities and emerging themes.

·        Develops media action plans, including setting objectives, coordinating appropriate internal/external spokespeople and interview opportunities, preparing key messages and news releases, determining appropriate media outlets, and evaluating results.

·        Initiates and maintains communications policies and processes to ensure consistent messaging and compatibility with the overall health care agenda.

·        Determines annual budgets in the context of the organization’s broader budget, monitors budget and takes corrective action as needed.

·        Lead for Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act requirements (FIPPA).

·        Develops and maintains strong media networks and develops key messages for use by the CEO and Executive Office in order to develop a strong public presence and positive brand and builds awareness with target stakeholder groups through various media.

·        Manages the annual external system partner engagement process, including design, analysis, reporting, communications, evaluation and transition into operations and/or quality improvement cycles.

·        Responsible for community engagement, communications and issues management functions for the LHIN, ensuring effective community engagement and communications policies, objectives, tools, mechanisms, methodologies, evaluation techniques and best practices are used.

·        Development and oversight of crisis communication and messaging.

·        Reports to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors on communication outreach metrics.


We seek a profile that includes:

·        Post-secondary/Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Communications, Journalism, Business Administration, Public Affairs), or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·        Minimum 10 years of experience in broad and extensive public relations/corporate communications experience in the public sector.

·        Extensive knowledge of communication concepts, strategies, and technical skills required in planning, execution, and evaluation of communications plans for internal and external audiences.

·        Thorough knowledge of current trends in writing, graphic arts, photographic arts, and display / exhibit development and electronic communications.

·        Extensive knowledge of crisis communications policies and procedures

Salary: Remuneration will be determined based on experience, in accordance with our policy

Status: Temporary Full-time, up to 18 months (75 hours bi-weekly)
