Community Relations & Issues Specialist

(Temporary up to 4 years, 5 years and 7 years)

Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario and our goal is to create a transportation network that enhances the prosperity, sustainability and quality of life for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. It leads the planning in the region with its Regional Transportation Plan that guides the work and investments of the organization. It builds light transit, bus rapid transit and Regional Express Rail and operates GO Transit, UP Express and PRESTO.

Our Community Relations Offices in Hamilton, Mississauga and Toronto are seeking three (3) Community Relations and Issues Specialists to develop and implement strategic and effective community relations and communications plans for the Hamilton, Hurontario and Finch West Light-Rail Transit Projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and creates integrated project design and construction communication strategies that support and enhance Metrolinx’s corporate image and objectives
  • Develops strong and effective relationships with the residents, businesses and other local stakeholders to enhance and expedite the Hamilton, Hurontario and Finch West Light-Rail Transit Projects and Metrolinx’s public communications efforts and image by:
  • Defining and clearly communicating Metrolinx’s viewpoint, interests, and project-related facts
  • Conducting primary and secondary research to investigate project and public information and produce accurate and effective key messages
  • Creates opportunities for community engagement to have a say in the projects
  • Developing, monitoring, and maintaining a communication/contact log to chronicle actions taken and results realized
  • Developing communications and presentations arising from project data and distribution to the affected communities and neighbourhoods, through various communications mediums including public facing project websites
  • Analyzing and interpreting information to ensure that all final products meet Metrolinx’s corporate community relations and communications standards and objectives

  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience in community relations, communications and media relations, customer service, with experience executing and communicating informational and promotional material to the general public
  • Complete proficiency in the English language is essential to facilitate high profile public communications
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques and tactics including social media
  • Completion of a diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Media or related field or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
  • Multilingualism is an asset
  • Previous experience working on large infrastructure projects will be considered an asset
  • Previous experience in facilitating public consultation processes or engagement sessions
  • Modern communication techniques and software applications (e.g. desktop publishing, word processing, web-authoring)
  • Knowledge of issues management related to multimedia products, and internet communications
  • Experience leading community projects to deliver finalized communications products within tight deadlines
  • Organizational, research, planning, and project management skills
  • Interpersonal, diplomacy, and oral/written communication skills to collaborate and provide project information to the general public
