Communications Officer, News and Public Relations

Job Description
The Alberta Teachers’ Association invites applications for the position of Communications Officer, News and Public Relations Permanent Full-Time Position The Alberta Teachers' Association, as the professional organization of teachers, promotes and advances public education, safeguards standards of professional practice and serves as the advocate for its members. Reporting to the associate coordinator, communications, this position is primarily responsible for supporting Association communications for the ATA News and other publications, writing news stories for these publications, creating related multimedia for use on-line, providing administrative support to the public relations program of the Association, and acting as business and advertising manager for the ATA News and other publications. Specific responsibilities include: • Identifying, developing and researching story ideas relevant to the Association and to public relations education; • Writing stories for publication in the ATA News and other publications and for related use on-line; • Managing the front page and news content of the Association’s website; • Assisting in the administration, planning and preparation of public education programs; • Overseeing contractual arrangements concerning printing and distribution of the ATA News and the ATA Magazine maintaining ongoing contact with contractors; • Reviewing printing, production, and distribution contracts and managing bidding processes as contracts expire; • Administering the sale and placement of paid advertisements in the ATA News and coordinating the placement of unpaid advertising; • Acting as administrative secretary to the Communications, Advocacy and Public Education Committee (CAPEC); and • Providing back-up to the Managing Editor of the ATA News by managing the assembly, editing and publication of the ATA News as required.
Qualifications
Qualifications: • Completion of a diploma or degree in Journalism, Print/Multimedia Production and/or Public Relations and a minimum of two years of experience in journalism and/or public relations with experience writing for publication, preferably in a newspaper, magazine, in-house or trade publication, and/or established on-line publication; • Demonstrated superior writing, creative composition and copy editing skills; • Photography and videography skills including the ability to capture high quality imaginer and sound as well as the ability to edit. • General corporate/institutional public relations communications skills; • Ability to create and post multimedia content on established websites and on-line channels; • Ability to work in Word, HTML, photo editing and processing; • Ability to make sound decisions and work within a timeline oriented environment; and • Must be able to travel up to 20% of the time including evenings and weekends. Salary: This position offers a competitive starting salary of $68,948 to a maximum of $86,771 plus a full range of employer-paid benefits. Hours of Work: 7 hours a day between 0800 and 1700, Monday to Friday. Work Location: Barnett House (11010 142 Street NW), Edmonton.
