Senior Manager, Internal Communications

Mastercard Foundation is a global foundation based in Toronto, Canada. Our programs promote financial inclusion and advance youth learning in Africa. The Foundation was established in 2006 through the generosity of Mastercard when it became a public company. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Communications, the Senior Manager, Internal Communications will support the success of the Foundation and Communications goals by influencing and leading strategic communications plans intended to create awareness, increase understanding, gain engagement and initiate behaviour change among staff. The position is responsible for implementing communications best practices, building communications capacity within the Foundation and elevating the Foundation’s brand with staff.


Specific Accountabilities

·        Creates annual strategic internal communications plan and budget to support the Foundation’s strategic priorities.

·        Responsible for developing and implementing the strategic and tactical internal communications plan for the CEO.

·        Works with various areas to develop internal communications strategies and plans using project management tools that support the Foundation’s initiatives, change management activities and employee engagement.

·        Supports the President and CEO in the preparation of corporate staff communications, including quarterly updates, strategy updates, and communication around culture, engagement work, etc.

·        Partners with others to identify clear, consistent and compelling internal messages; writes and edits content to engage and motivate employees and increase understanding of and commitment to the Foundation’s vision, values and objectives.

·        Partners with the Communications team to ensure all internal communications achieves the right message and consistency.

·        Supports efforts to ensure flow of effective internal messaging from internal stakeholders to employees including presentations, announcements, process changes, memos and written articles.

·        Works with others to develop content for the Foundation’s monthly internal newsletter

·        Participates on various internal committees and project teams to provide communications guidance and support in the execution of internal communications plans and change management initiatives.

·        Improves quality of communications through the development of communications skills and tools, and recommends new or innovative communications methods with the goal of improving execution.

·        Creates the content strategy for owned areas of the employee intranet and Communications team site. Collaborates with IT and Knowledge Management to develop and execute project plans related to intranet improvement implementations.

·        Executes “day-to-day” internal staff communication.

·        Responsible for looking for opportunities to leverage communications externally and internally.



·        Degree or diploma in communications, media/public relations, journalism or related degree/diploma.

·        Minimum 10+ years of progressive responsibility in the communications field with strong experience in internal communications and employee engagement.

·        Experience/knowledge of a variety of current communications practices, methods, styles and best practices.

·        Experience in working with senior leadership teams.

·        Knowledge of change management process and communications.

·        Knowledge of graphic design principles, photo editing and layout would be an asset.

·        Experience building communications capacity at all levels of the organization.

·        Ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment with a “hands on” approach.

·        Excellent time management skills with an ability to juggle multiple and often competing priorities while using good judgement and critical thinking skills.

·        Results-driven, flexible, intellectually curious and open. This individual is comfortable with ambiguity, receptive to new ideas and willing to change when presented with best options.

·        Ability to formulate and develop a new or creative approach to a problem and inspire team members to do so as well.

·        Ability to build relationships throughout all levels of the Foundation and be able to work independently and within a team, with a service-oriented approach.

·        Strong communications skills, both oral and written, as well as exceptional interpersonal skills.

·        Proficient with Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft suite of products.
