Strategic Communications Advisor

Job Description
The Alberta Energy Regulator’s Public Affairs Branch provides proactive strategic internal and external communications, web, document, editing, graphic design, strategy, and writing services to help the AER in its ongoing dialogue with Albertans, AER staff, industry, stakeholders, and the Government of Alberta.

The Public Affairs Advisor supports issues management, communications planning, and execution. The advisor identifies current and emerging issues and trends through research and analysis, and prepares clear and concise materials that support strategic priorities, while considering internal and external pressures, sensitivities, resource limitations, and shifting priorities. The advisor provides timely and strategic proactive and reactive communications advice and support to build and protect the AER’s reputation and cultivate effective relationships with its various stakeholders. This includes writing plain language content for a variety of mediums. The advisor works directly with AER clients, approvers, and other key internal stakeholders on issues that are affecting or that may affect the AER and to ensure communications products meet the AER’s strategic objectives.
 

Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Identify issues and trends through research and analysis and prepare appropriate strategies and tactics to safeguard the AER’s reputation.
  • Oversee the AER’s correspondence unit, ensuring efficient and effective responses, working with senior leaders and decision makers, and writing and reviewing materials.
  • Write content in both corporate and journalistic styles.
  • Collaborate with various AER branches to develop and execute strategic communications planning for external and internal initiatives.
  • Assist with the planning, preparation, and dissemination of information about the AER and its activities.
  • Work with all levels within the AER—including senior leadership—to coordinate and develop communications tools for external audiences.
  • Ensure that communications products are aligned with and support objectives set in the AER Strategic Plan. 

Qualifications
  • Degree in public relations or journalism, or diploma in these disciplines and an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of four years of experience
  • Experience in issues management, crisis communications, and media relations
  • Experience in communications planning and execution
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently, supporting team efforts and timelines
  • Government or regulatory work experience is an asset
  • Accreditation in Public Relations is an asset
