Job Description
The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a Communications Officer for the BC Wildfires Recovery Program. The Communications Officer reports to the Communications Lead for the Recovery Program, and will be a contributing member of the Communications and Partnerships Department. The Communications Officer maximizes opportunities to demonstrate accountability of finances and effective programs to beneficiaries, donors, media, and other partners and stakeholders. The Communications Officer will participate in the response to the demands of the media on the day-to-day operations, provide technical support on communication issues to staff, and produce tools to communicate effectively with beneficiaries.
Education and Experience:
The minimum qualifications for this job are completion of post-secondary education in communication, journalism, public relations or a related field and at least three (3) years of job-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have excellent communications skills in English, a working knowledge of French is preferred, and fluency in another language is an asset.
Demonstrated abilities as a spokesperson and proven writing skills in a variety of different formats (web, reports, and news releases) are essential.
Skills and knowledge in developing high quality communications tools for public relations materials, such as video and photos, is required.
Experience working in response to issues related to crisis and disasters is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to work in high stress environments with minimal supervision is needed.
Strong initiative, diplomacy, flexibility, and sound decision making skills are required.
Must have a valid driver’s licence, Basic First Aid certification, or be willing to acquire certification.
Experience working with volunteers and in a culturally diverse environment is a definite asset.
Customer service skills.
