Job Description
Communications Advisor, Office of the Mayor & Council Job Details: Non-Union Temporary This is a contract opportunity lasting approximately 12-15 months. Under the direction and guidance of the Chief of Staff, Office of the Mayor, this position is responsible for developing marketing and media relations programs to enhance the reputation of the town and provides online communications and media relations support to the Office of the Mayor and Council (“OMAC”). Job Responsibilities: •Develops both traditional and online communications materials for the OMAC including briefing and speaking notes, speeches, presentations, news releases, op-eds, articles, e-newsletters and web content •Recommend and implement a media relations strategy which includes coordination with local media stakeholders •Recommend and implement public engagement strategies on key town initiatives and support community outreach activities by the OMAC; •Help organize special events Coordinate production of Mayor’s biannual newsletter and monthly e-newsletter; and, develop content for various other communications vehicles. •Contribute to the development of a strategic communications plan to promote and support the positive reputation of the town; •Review and track issues of interest to OMAC and recommend responses to such issues: •Alert the Chief of Staff of trends or issues of wider concern; •Undertake special projects and other duties as assigned
Demonstrated Skills: •You have a university degree, diploma and/or post graduate certificate in communications or related field along with three to five years of relevant experience in corporate communications, public relations, and marketing or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. Your formal education is augmented by progressively responsible positions that have resulted in outstanding writing and editorial skills both online and in print, simplifying and communicating complex or technical information. You also have developed an appreciation of political environments including experience working with elected officials and/or senior management; •Superb written and oral communications skills; preparing speeches, presentations, articles, news releases, and other written documents in variety of styles; •Experience managing online communications including content management, use of social media and web-based writing and editing skills; •Ability to think strategically, research issues and recommend effective solutions; •Understanding and experience in media relations and issues management; •Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships; •Ability to manage deadlines and time pressures, competing priorities and contentious issues; •Computer skills in Microsoft Office and Indesign; •Experience working in Reddot an asset
