The New Brunswick Department of Health has established a separate company, Ambulance New Brunswick (ANB), to provide land and air ambulance services to the residents of New Brunswick. ANB has contracted with New Brunswick EMS Inc. (NB EMS) to ensure the delivery of these services under a long-term contract.

While reporting directly to the Director, Communications and Marketing at Medavie, the manager’s day to day responsibilities to support the operation will require working mainly with the General Manager, Organizational Performance at NB EMS as well as other senior leaders in all departments at NB EMS. The Manager, Communications will be an integral contributor in the strategic management of relationships between our organization and our diverse stakeholders, through the use of effective corporate communication, to realize organizational goals and serve the public interest. As part of the broader Medavie organization, the incumbent also has the opportunity to collaborate with communications colleagues across the operations to leverage a range of insights and experience and share best practices.

Major Responsibilities

  • As the senior communications lead, acts as a trusted advisor to Senior Management and others in the organization, providing strategic communications counsel and overseeing a small team of communications professionals;
  • Responsible for the development of external communication strategies that are responsive to the emerging needs of key audiences including, but not limited to, the media, community partners, and stakeholders;
  • Leads the implementation and evaluation of external and internal communication initiatives to convey key messages, organizational positioning and strategic objectives to targeted audiences. Plays an active role in informing and engaging employees and stakeholders to advance strategic initiatives, and to build, manage and protect NB EMS’s reputation and culture;
  • Engages in regular dialogue with senior leaders and others to maintain an understanding of the current employee communication challenges and requirements. Actively mentors the Communications team to meet challenges by inspiring peak performance;
  • Designs and implements ongoing feedback mechanisms to evaluate, through data, the effectiveness of communication strategies and respond to the changing information needs of stakeholders;
  • Leads initiatives to build employee excitement around brand and core/new program developments, and ensures that branding standards and guidelines are adhered to throughout the organization;
  • Oversees management of NB EMS’s and ANB’s online presence, including social media, by ensuring clear and effective positioning is reflected consistently throughout all components; and
  • Implements a media relations strategy that includes but is not limited to:
    • developing and nurturing relationships with the media
    • planning and implementing media events;
    • developing opportunities for media interviews, and working with spokespeople to ensure they are well prepared; and
    • developing strategies for managing issues and crises, to ensure the organization is informed and responsive to maintain public confidence.
  • Post-secondary degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing or a related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively-responsible related experience with demonstrated ability to lead a team of diverse communication practitioners;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; gifted with words and narrative;
  • Good working knowledge of the media and its functions; an understanding of the New Brunswick media landscape would be considered an asset
  • Savvy with social media, including overall management and engagement;
  • Thorough understanding of communication processes, planning and evaluation;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative and innovative solutions;
  • Calm under pressure, a multi-tasker, obsessed with details and execution and thrives working on projects;
  • Bilingualism (verbal and written) is required.
