Manager, Communications

Job Description

The Manager, Communications will be responsible for overseeing the representation of a positive organizational image and branding to the media, clients, shareholders, and the general public. They are also involved in all aspects of the development and implementation of Northwest Territories Power Corporation's internal and external communication strategies and public affairs activities. The Manager, Communications will be responsible for providing issue management and confidential communications coordination to Senior Management.


  • Work with Senior Management to develop, implement and manage the Corporation’s comprehensive communications plan aimed specifically at enhancing corporate image/reputation in the market place.
  • Research and prepare reports, motions and policies on a broad range of utility business topics, including the Communications Plan, for the Board of Directors to review. Also responsible for presenting the Communication Plan.
  • Produces the Ministerial briefing binder, manages work plan and maintains current by; pro-active identification of issues for inclusion, active management of Legislative timelines and researching and preparing briefing materials and key messages.
  • Develops strategies and standards, writes and produces internal and external publications and advertising utilizing consultants as required.
  • Compiles and co-ordinates publication of the annual report and prepares or assists management in writing speeches, position papers, briefing notes, and presentations on major policy or program issues to ensure the effective communication of company positions or proposals related to operations and the delivery of services.
  • Recommends and facilitates improvements to further develop the Corporation’s social media and web site as an effective marketing communications vehicle ensuring the accurate and timely release and up-dating of information contained on the company site.
  • Assist in the management of media relation activities, act as the Corporation’s media spokesperson in some instances, and assist in the management of crisis communication by anticipating issues, gathering information, preparing statements and advising the President and Senior Management on the content and timing of multimedia releases.
  • Provides policy oversight and administers the Corporation’s sponsorship and corporate donations program.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or Marketing with a minimum of 7 years of progressive responsibility in corporate communication or public relations preferably in at least two industries.
  • Skillful communications practitioner with excellent editorial and listening skills and the ability to conceptualize, structure and write compelling copy for brochures, presentations, internet sites, newspaper and broadcast media, and published Corporate reports.
  • Must have excellent writing skills as this is a core competency of this position.
  • Broad knowledge of print, video and web-production technologies and skilled in the use of word processing, communication and presentation software.
  • Ability to interact with and advise senior executives and to manage multiple projects with limited administrative resources.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective on-going contact with local, regional and head office managers, staff, customers, community representatives, and the media to facilitate the development and delivery of marketing communication and public relations programs.
  • A comprehensive understanding of local, regional and northern political and social economic conditions and values considered an asset.
  • Accomplished computer skills (MS Office suite, MS Project, Outlook, etc.) and ability to apply relevant design software.
  • Must undergo a successful criminal background check.
