Communications Advisor, Parks and Roads Services

The Communications and Engagement Department is looking for a dynamic, talented, and experienced communications professional to join our team. Key duties include:

  • Contribute to ensuring that the City is informing citizens about parks and roadways matters in timely, open, honest and transparent ways, using accessible and user friendly communication channels
  • Consult and identify communications needs and options by serving as advisor to senior leaders managing both operational areas as well as planning and development priorities
  • Lead the development, implementation, planning and management of short and long term communications strategies to support multiple client groups responsible for parks and roads programs
  • Collaborate with communications, marketing, and engagement colleagues to advance the City’s objectives
  • Write and edit a variety of materials, including communications and issues management plans, news releases for traditional and new media, speeches, key messages, backgrounders, letters, briefing notes, web content, articles, brochures, and posters for a range of audiences
  • Identify and manage emerging issues, working with partners in a variety of business areas to protect the reputation of the corporation
  • Proactively and reactively manage media relations to ensure timely, accurate and fair reporting of corporate initiatives
  • Seek opportunities to generate positive media coverage. Develop key messages, media releases and social media, pitch City focused stories, coach and prepare spokespeople, act as spokesperson as required, and arrange media availabilities
  • Leverage social media in support of corporate objectives, including generating social media plans, writing content, and liaising with the Media Relations Unit and Marketing branch to optimize social media use
  • Organize and coordinate events, including writing speaking notes, liaising with participants and producing other materials that may be required
  • Develop and lead the production of communication materials and plans, ensuring products meet corporate standards, business objectives, and are on or under budget

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday to Friday. After-hours work may be required, to provide communications support during storms, floods, and other events affecting parks and roads services.

Salary: $42.120 - $53.079 (Hourly); $74,204.910 - $93,511.930 (Annually)

Qualifications
  • University graduation in a communications, public relations or related discipline, supplemented by a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in a corporate communications, public relations or public affairs position

OR

  • Diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in a corporate communications, public relations or public affairs position
  • Exceptional writing, editing and storytelling skills
  • Extensive knowledge of communications practices, principles, and techniques
  • Experience in successfully creating, developing, implementing and evaluating communication plans
  • Experience with social marketing initiatives
  • Experience building strong working relationships with colleagues at all levels of an organization
  • Experience working with contractors or consultants
  • Experience in media relations, both in preparing spokespeople and acting as a spokesperson
  • Superior issues identification management and media relations skills
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Strong project management and event planning skills
  • Experience and proficiency with contemporary computer technologies (e.g. Google platform, Microsoft Word, Adobe suite, etc.)
  • Knowledge of transportation, safety, cycling, or other community programs would be an asset
  • Accreditation in the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) would be an asset
  • After-hours work is required to ensure communications services during storms, floods, heavy snowfall and other events affecting parks and roads services.
